Your Pet's Mental Health
Is Your Pet Showing Signs of Early Dementia?
As dogs and cats age, changes can occur in their brains. These are similar to dementia in humans. The cause of what is known as cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) is a progressive loss of nerve cells. Early symptoms of cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) are often overlooked. However, 14 – 35% of dogs over 8 years old and approximately 20% of cats over 9 years old are affected by cognitive dysfunction. For pets over 15 years old, this figure is more than 50%.
For dogs, we have compiled a questionnaire that helps your veterinarian identify signs of possible cognitive impairment in your dog. The questions relate to changes in your pet's behavior over the past 12 months.

For your cat, at least an annual health check with blood pressure measurement and blood value monitoring, especially of thyroid values, is highly recommended at your veterinary practice. Observe your cat closely and please mention any behavioral changes during your vet visit without being prompted. Possible signs of an age-related illness or cognitive dysfunction include, for example:
- Seeking other resting places
- Difficulty climbing stairs or reaching elevated areas
- Apparent disorientation or insecurity
- Changes in eating habits
- Restlessness or increased sleepiness
- Increased clinginess or sudden aggression
- Change in grooming behavior
- Unusual vocalizations
Early detection of CDS allows for targeted support of the animal's cognitive health, e.g., with the help of selected micronutrients.
